What Is the American College of Dentists?

The American College of Dentists (ACD) is the oldest major honorary organization for dentists. Its members have exemplified excellence through outstanding leadership and exceptional contributions to dentistry and society. The American College of Dentists was founded on August 20, 1920, to elevate dentistry standards, encourage graduate study, and grant Fellowship to those who have done meritorious work. The American College of Dentists is nonprofit and apolitical and has long been regarded as the “conscience of dentistry.”

The College has played a vital role in positively shaping the profession. Early accomplishments include being the first organization to promote what we today call “continuing education.” The College is currently involved in a wide range of activities, including ethics summits, the Professional Ethics Initiative: an entry-level ethics course, online leadership courses, leadership symposia, a multimedia dental history resource, resource materials for dental schools, and a variety of award programs.

What Is the International College of Dentists?

The International College of Dentists (ICD) is a leading international honor society for dentists, conceived in 1920 with over 12,000 members (designated as Fellows). Fellowship in the College is by invitation only. It is granted in recognition of an individual dentist’s “outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service, and dedication to the continued progress of dentistry for the benefit of humankind.” Before being recognized as a Fellow of the ICD, the candidate’s qualifications, and achievements are evaluated by a series of credential committees to ensure that he or she is deserving of this honor and will live up to the ICD motto of “Recognizing Service as well as the Opportunity to Serve.”

The five College Core Values are:

  • Leadership: Uphold the highest standard of professional competence and personal ethics.
  • Recognition: Recognize distinguished service to the profession and the public worldwide.
  • Humanitarianism: Foster measures for the prevention and treatment of oral disease by encouraging and supporting humanitarian projects.
  • Professional Relations: Provide a universal forum for the cultivation of cordial relations within the profession and assist in the preservation of the highest perception of the profession.
  • Education: Contribute to the advancement of the profession of dentistry by fostering the growth and diffusion of dental knowledge worldwide.
