Like all other surgeries, a clear post-op care routine is necessary to avoid any mishaps during the healing process. The same goes for surgical dental implants in Plano.
Dental implants are one way of maintaining aesthetics if you're someone who's lost a tooth (or teeth). For most people, having a great smile can do wonders, and it can be a great source of anxiety and frustration if it was ever ruined.
If you're looking to learn more about some of the post-operative care routines after your dental implant surgery, read on.
Usage of straws will cause the blood clot of the surgical area to dislodge and would increase the chances of potential infection. It is recommended to drink straight from the cup to avoid any disturbances in the healing process
If you feel the urge to spit, don’t. Use a tissue and wipe as needed.
Aggravating the area will only prolong the pain and healing of the area. It is recommended to keep the tongue and your finger away from that spot, no matter how tempting it is.
Smoking will increase the chances of the surgical area being infected. Thus it is unadvisable to smoke if the patient has a history of smoking. This will be beneficial to the healing of the wound.
Minor bleeding is expected after dental implant surgeries. This should subside within an hour or two, and a little oozing of blood is normal and may persist for a few hours.
One way of stopping the bleeding is keeping a damp gauze over the area with biting pressure for 30 minutes to an hour. It is also best if you rest with your head elevated at an angle. If it persists, then going back to the dentist is the next best option.
Swelling is normal after the surgery. It may range from mild to severe depending on the patient. Usage of ice packs will help minimize the swelling and bruising around the mouth and face. Put an ice pack on the area for around 20 minutes at a time for the first 24 hours and begin to use a warm compress on the cheek after 48 hours.
When eating after the surgery, it is best if the patient eats soft food like Jell-O, pudding, ice cream, or yogurt. Avoid extremely hot foods and foods with sharp edges like pretzels and chips. This will allow the wound to heal and for you to avoid chewing over the surgery area.

Even after surgery, oral hygiene is still important. The use of a normal toothbrush may not be advised. A soft-bristled toothbrush should be used gently to not aggravate the wound.
The sutures are not to be touched. Unless told otherwise, some sutures are dissolvable and will fall out on their own. If the sutures are not dissolvable, consult the doctor regarding when the sutures can be taken off. Do not attempt to take the sutures off by yourself.
During the healing process, bad breath is a common occurrence and will disappear when fully healed. If there appears to be a white, possibly hard tissue on the area of surgery, it is normal and may signify healing tissue.
After surgery, the doctor may prescribe you medications for pain. Take medication as directed and call your dentist if there are severe side effects. When given antibiotics, consult and tell the doctor about medications that you are taking.
Do not drive, swim, drink alcohol, or operate machinery when taking pain medicine. Have someone with you at all times to help drive you home. One should also not exceed dosage after surgery
When you are still taking medications, avoid doing excessive exercises and movements. Go easy and have someone to assist you while you recover. Physical activities are prohibited for the first 48 hours after surgery.
