How to Deal with Impacted Wisdom Teeth

November 15, 2021

They say having wisdom teeth is a sign of you being wise, but the wisdom tooth is something we get from our predecessors. This was when fruits, seeds, and plants were the main diet, and wisdom teeth were needed for grinding hard food.  If you ever need advice on what to do with impacted wisdom teeth in 76210, talk to your dentist.

Getting your wisdom teeth checked and removed is a common occurrence in most places. This procedure is now considered a coming of age. This will also help improve your teeth if the wisdom teeth are impacted and are causing discomfort.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars at the farthest back of the gums. Evolution has shown a change of diet of humans, making the third set of molars unused.

These molars commonly come out during the late teens and early adulthood of each child. However, not everyone’s wisdom teeth will come out and impact the alignment of teeth.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Get Impacted?

Impacted wisdom teeth are pretty standard but not so noticeable because they are often stuck under the gums.

Impacted teeth are caused by the lack of space in the gums, which leads the tooth to be at an odd angle. Not all wisdom teeth will be at an odd angle. Some align perfectly with the rest of the teeth, and you get to retain your beautiful smile.

How Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth Diagnosed?

Impacted wisdom teeth are only seen when you get an x-ray for your teeth. This shows the positioning of the wisdom teeth and any unknown and hidden damages underneath the gums and the bones.

Merely checking the gums using the naked eye will not discern the impacted wisdom teeth and the hidden damage that the wisdom teeth have caused. A simple x-ray of the whole mouth is enough to help diagnose.

Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Not all impacted wisdom teeth show any symptoms, but it is good to know in advance if the symptoms are present. Below are some of the symptoms commonly felt by someone who experiences impacted wisdom teeth.

  • Swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swelling around the jaw
  • Bad breath

When to Remove Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Not all wisdom teeth affect the teeth, but it is best to know in advance when you can have them removed if they do. The impacted wisdom teeth will show symptoms that can be considered concerning, and based on the severity, one should consult a dentist.

Damaged Teeth

The extra molars that are growing can push around the other teeth and cause some discomfort and pain. This is a main reason for the removal of the wisdom teeth. They can cause a lot of dental issues by forcibly changing the alignment of the teeth.

Jaw Damage

The new growing teeth can have complications such as increasing cysts. The untreated cysts can damage the bone and the nerves of the mouth, leading to many complications and more treatment plans.

Issues with Sinus

The wisdom teeth can affect the sinuses and may cause pressure, blockage, or congestion that will affect breathing. These problems should be addressed as soon as possible.

Inflamed Gums

Wisdom teeth complications may cause inflammation around the gums and the jaws. This will be painful for the patient and is quite hard to clean because of the swelling.

Alignment

Wisdom teeth can cause misalignment of the teeth that would cause discomfort in the jaws and gums. The pushed teeth may crowd, and they will have to be realigned through braces or alternative methods such as clear aligners.

Cavities

When the gums swell because of the wisdom teeth, they cannot be cleaned easily, and there will be pockets that will house cavities and bacteria that will further aid the formation of the cavities. This can also cause a pain and discomfort.

How to Deal with Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth will cause complications in the mouth, gums, and teeth, which would lead to more dental problems. Surgery is often the necessary treatment for the wisdom teeth complications that the dentist will suggest.
